Profile of Consultant: Colin Hewlett BSc PhD CChem DGSA
Qualified DGSA (all classes of dangerous
goods by road), Chartered Chemist holding BSc and PhD degrees in Chemistry;
registered as a Safety Consultant with the Royal Society of Chemistry, the
Energy Institute, the American Chemical Society and the Chemical Hazards
Communication Society.
Involved with hazardous chemicals for 40
years in R&D and manufacturing operations in the UK and USA in speciality chemicals,
petrochemicals and the oil industry. After PhD research in organophosphorus
chemistry at London University and a postdoctoral research fellowship
in high energy nitrato complexes at Tulane University,
joined Laporte Chemicals to work on organic peroxides R&D. This was
followed by an R&D appointment with Halcon International on high pressure
oxidation and carbonylation chemistry and then manufacturing experience with
Rohm and Haas on acrylic monomers plants. Appointed as Technical Director of
Hornett Bros, a speciality chemicals manufacturer supplying organosulphur
additives to the oil industry, and after 20 years in this position with
responsibility for compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental
legislation set up CHEMICALS AND TRANSPORT LIMITED as an independent consultancy. Affiliated with
the Dangerous Goods Agency
group in 2008.
Experience encompasses labelling and
documentation for carriage (CDG, ADR, IMDG), Safety Data Sheet preparation
(CHIP/REACH) and classification and labelling (CHIP/CLP) for supply, EINECS
registration, COSHH safety audits, Waste regulations, Safety training and
seminars, overseas inventory registration and liaison with HSE and EA
inspectors.
